Yola Stand For Myself

British singer-songwriter Yola made an impression with her debut album in 2019, Walk Through Fire, breaking stereotypes as a black British country singer. Her follow-up, Stand For Myself, breaks out of genre boundaries and is her best work to date according to Jim and Greg. They have a wide-ranging conversation with Yola that covers how the pandemic affected her writing process, differences between racism in the U.S. and the U.K., and her role as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a forthcoming Baz Luhrmann film.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
